Juichend zijn de recensies van de nieuwste Zweedse ontdekking sinds Nicolai Dunger en St
Thomas en dan bedoel ik natuurlijk Thomas Denver Jonsson. Deze vroege twintiger heeft het
voor elkaar gekregen om op basis van een EP "Then I Kissed Her Softly (febr. 2003) en het
hier besproken "Hope To Her", dat in Zweden in oktober 2003 het licht zag, gevraagd te
worden voor de 2004 editie van Take Root in Assen. Collega-sites en het Britse Uncut
Magazine zijn lyrisch over deze jonge Zweed als zijnde het Europese antwoord op Will Oldham,
of nog groter, op Neil Young.
Thomas Denver Jonsson moet dus wel erg goed zijn. En laten we wel wezen, het is deze jonge
Zweed gegund. Het feit dat een jonge muzikant uit Noord-Europa hier in West-Europa zo'n
indruk achterlaat is opmerkelijk en een stimulans voor anderen. Alleen ... ik hoor het niet.
Ik zie of hoor niet het briljante van "Hope To Her". Als ik de cd beluister, en dat heb ik
toch meermalen gedaan, hoor ik een muzikant met een - op z'n zachts gezegd - onvaste stem.
Een stem die nog net niet uit de bocht schiet bij het grootste deel van de 'fluistersongs'
waaruit "Hope To Her" bestaat en die dat wel doet als het tempo naar mid-tempo drijgt te
gaan. Een directe link naar Will Oldham en zijn Palace etc. muziek ligt hier voor de hand;
dezelfde wringende stem en soortgelijke lofi productie. Maar er zijn mensen die dat mooi
vinden natuurlijk. En dat mag.
Toch wil ik wijzen op vergelijkbare albums die de laatste tijd zijn uitgekomen, zoals de
titelloze debuutplaat van Tony Dekker van The Great Lake Swimmers. Die is weliswaar
verschrikkelijk lo-fi, maar bevat zeker lekkere 'hooks' en mijn inziens pakkender liedjes.
En ook het laatste werk van Iron & Wine spreek me om dezelfde reden meer aan. Misschien is
het aantrekkelijke van "Hope To Her" wel gelegen in het gegeven dat je af en toe denkt naar
de jonge Neil Young te luisteren. Je vindt op deze plaat liedjes die dezelfde opbouw
vertonen als Neil's akoestische werk, met dezelfde breaks en soortgelijke mondharmonica
solo's.
Toch nog even wat sterke momenten van deze plaat naar voren halen. Zo heb ik veel respect
voor de kwetsbare momenten die Thomas DJ hier heeft vastgelegd. Zo is het a capella-nummer
"Pale" zeer gedurfd en indrukwekkend. Hebben "The I Kissed Her Softly" en "24 Seven" mooie
verstilde momenten in zich en ook wel pakkende melodiëen - iets wat ik op een aantal andere
nummers node mis - en geeft de bonustrack, de samen met Rosie Thomas en Damien Jurado
gespeelde live-versie van opener "First in Line", goed de (on-)mogelijkheden van Thomas
Denver Jonsson aan.
Rest de vraag of we hier nu inderdaad te maken hebben met een aanstormend talent of met een
- deze keer niet uit de UK afkomstige - 'hype'?

Cheering are the reviews of the newest Swedish discovery since Nicolai
Dunger and St Thomas and then of course I mean Thomas Denver Jonsson. This
person in his early twenties has gotten the furrow each other round on
basis of an EP "Then I Kissed Here Softly (febr. 2003) and the here
discussed "Hope To Her", that saw the light in Sweden in October 2003,
asked to become for the 2004 edition of Take Root in Assen.
Colleague-sites and the British Uncut Magazine are enthusiastic over this
young Swede as the European answer to Will Oldham, or yet larger, to Neil
Young. Thomas Denver Jonsson must be very good. The fact that a young
musician from North-Europe leaves such impression here in western Europe
remarkable and a stimulating for others. Only... I do not hear it. I see
or hear not the brilliance of "Hope To Her". If I listen to the cd, and
that have I really done several times, I hear a musician with a - on be
soft said - unsteady voice. A voice that yet just not from the curve
shoots by the largest part of the 'fluistersongs', from which "Hope To
Her" exists, and that well does as the tempo to mid-tempo drijgt to
go. A direct link to Will Oldham and its Palace etc. music lies here for
the hand; the same wringing voice and similar lofi production. Only there
are men that that beautiful find natural. And that may.
Yet I want point on comparable albums that the last times have been come
out, as the selftitled debut record of Tony Dekker of The Great Lake
Swimmers. That is indeed terrible lo-fi, but contain certain delicious
'hooks' and my ssee pakkender songs. And also the last work of Iron &
Wine speak drove me round the same more on. Perhaps is the attractive of
"Hope To Her" well lain in the given that you finished and closed think
to the young Neil Young to listen. You find on this record songs that the
same structure show as Neil's acoustic work, with the same breaks and
similar harmonica solo.
Yet yet just what strong moments of this record to in front get. As have I
a lot of respect for the vulnerable moments that Thomas DJ here has
vastgelegd. As is the a capella-number "Directly" sore dared and
impressive. Have on "Then I Kissed Here Softly" and "24 Seven" beautiful
tranquil moments in self and also well arresting melodies - something I
on a number of other numbers need wrong - and gives the bonustrack, the
together with Rosie Thomas and Damien Jurado played live-version of more
open "First in Line", well the possibilites of Thomas Denver Jonsson.
Do not remain the question or we here now indeed to make have with an
onrushing talent or with a - these turn from the UK originating - 'hype'?
