Title:
Thomas Denver Jonsson - Hope To HerDescription:
Thomas Denver Jonsson isn't the first singer/songwriter to beam Americana heartbreak from his Swedish homeland, but his fine spun vocals and sublime arrangements make for some of the more memorable of these exports. His shy, darkly earnest vocals weave cautiously through tender ballads, even going entirely unaccompanied on "Pale", then gain confidence as the album unveils ensemble country rockers like "Shades Of Green" and "Mallards". Swells of Neil Young peak as the album opens up, and hints of Will Oldham and Gram Parsons surface without overwhelming Jonsson's sweetly downhearted style. The depth of the production and arrangements here beckon you to turn the volume up and sink down into these humble, yet compelling compositions. Backing band The September Sunrise are delicate and instinctive, adding gentle percussion and soft cries of pedal steel or harmonica in just the right doses. Uncut Magazine gave this debut full-length four stars, calling it "A warm, uncluttered delight." (kite)
