Het ruime begrip americana (alt.county, kuntrie, roots, wat u wilt) is al lang niet meer een
puur Amerikaans genre. Ok, de grootheden (Wilco, Calexico) komen uit de Verenigde Staten.
Maar aan de andere kant van de Atlantische Oceaan staan ook belangwekkende artiesten op.
Spanje heeft Migala, Groot-Brittannië mag trots zijn op Lucky Jim en uit Nederland kwam
onlangs een prachtige plaat uit van Minco Eggersman (ME).
Dan vergeet ik Zweden natuurlijk, het land waar Thomas Denver Jonsson vandaan komt. Met Hope
to Her mag hij zich scharen bij de betere americana-artiesten van Europa. Op Hope to Her
heerst een ongedwongen sfeer, vooral het lekker luie steelgitaarspel leidt tot 'zomeravond
op de veranda'-achtige sferen. Soms rammelt de lo-fi country en Jonsson is ook geen goede
zanger, vaak moet hij het onderste uit de kast halen voor de hoge noten. Maar net als bij
Neil Young komt dat de gevoeligheid alleen maar ten goede. Vierentwintig uur kostte het om
het album op te nemen, zo leest de bij de cd geleverde bio. Net als bij Royal City onlangs
met hun plaat Little Heart's Ease is er gekozen voor een snel, authentiek opnameproces.
Misschien toch de erfenis van Bob Dylan, die kwam de studio in, ging spelen, en aan het
einde van de dag was er weer een plaat klaar.
Hope to Her is een innemende lo-fi countryplaat die wederom bewijst dat er geen Deep South,
geen Mexico als buurland, en geen redneck-mentaliteit nodig zijn om Amerikaans muziek te
spelen. Een stroom muzikanten uit Europa kan dit kunstje inmiddels ook. Niet in de minste
plaats de Zweed Thomas Denver Jonsson. Heerlijke alternatieve rammelcountry.

The wide term Americana (alt.country, country, roots, whatever you want to

Of course, I'm forgetting Sweden, the country of Thomas Denver Jonsson. With
Hope To Her, he can add his name to the list of the better Americana artists
in Europe. Hope To Her has an unforced atmosphere; especially the nice and
relaxed steel guitar playing leads to 'summer evenings on the porch' vibes.
Sometimes, the lo-fi country kicks in, and Jonsson is also a good singer,
often reaching far and wide for those high notes. But, just as with Neil
Young, this only helps enhance the emotions. According to the biography
accompanying the CD, it took 24 hours to record the album. Just as with
Royal City's Little Heart's Ease, the choice was for a fast and authentic
recording process. Maybe it's the influence of Bob Dylan, who arrived at the
studio, sat down and played, and at the end of the day a new record was
finished. Hope To Her is an enchanting lo-fi country record, proving that
you don't need a Deep South, Mexico as a neighboring country, or a redneck
mentality to make American music. A stream of European musicians has proven
this by now. Especially Thomas Denver Jonsson. Wonderful alternative
ramshackle country.
