Wat ik persoonlijk heel erg mooi vind aan het medium
muziek,
is dat het zich absoluut geen geografische beperkingen
laat opleggen.
Even een voorbeeldje om te illustreren wat ik met die
uitspraak precies
bedoel. Wat heb je bijvoorbeeld nog aan een term als
americana, als de
mooiste platen in dat genre al lang niet meer uitsluitend
in het land van
herkomst worden afgeleverd? Recente voorbeelden van
Vlaamse, Nederlandse
en Duitse makelij spraken wat dat betreft boekdelen. En
de misschien wel
mooiste alt. countryplaat van de afgelopen maanden blijkt
nu zelfs van
Zweedse origine. De vijfentwintigjarige Thomas Denver
Jonsson tekent
ervoor. Met zijn begeleidingsgroep The September Sunrise
presenteert hij
je op “Hope To Her” een zwaar naar de vroege jaren
zeventig overhellend
geluidslandschap, waarbij je spontaan aan mensen als een
Gram Parsons
en een Neil Young gaat denken. Jonsson blijkt een kanjer
van een songwriter,
wiens liedjes druipen van de melancholie. Een wat
klagerige stem, fraai
mondharmonicaspel, beheerste gitaren en een zachtjes
jankende steel
doen de rest. Nummers van het kaliber van “Black &
Blue (Pale Angel You)”,
“First In Line”, “Come On Up” en “Then I Kissed Her
Softly” hebben het in
zich om zowel de fans van het hier eerder al vernoemde
tweetal, als die
van pakweg Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Karl Broadie of de
Jayhawks een verrassing
van formaat te bezorgen. En “Hope To Her” verdient het om
hier binnen de
kortste keren bij een grote verdeler terecht te komen,
zodat een slechte
verkrijgbaarheid ervan niet langer een beletsel kan
vormen om tot de aanschaf
ervan over te gaan, want dit is echt wel een essentiële
plaat.
