Scandinavia may not be your first choice of regions for classic folk music, but in recent times it has given us the likes of Nicolai Dunger and now Thomas Denver. It shouldn’t really come as any surprise considering that most of the rich historical folk tales we have originate in Scandinavia, that when a musician comes through they are actually very good. "First Line" is a taster for the official UK release of the very highly rated "Hope to Her" album. Although it gives us a couple of new tracks, First Line itself is taken from the album (two versions on the EP including a fantastic duet version with Rosie Thomas), and the Will Oldamesque 24 Seven. Out of the five songs the album tracks are definitely the stronger, as would be expected, but the songs contain that sparseness and bleakness that marries so well with folk and altcountry music, but with that unexpected twist in sound and lyrics that seem to hail to the type of folk Will Oldham has tried to give us.
